Hi, my name is Faith Appelbaum. I am currently a long-term substitute third-grade special education teacher in Lakewood, New Jersey. I have 105 credit hours from Rider University, where I studied Elementary Education and Multidisciplinary Studies with a concentration in History and a dual minor in Special Education and Early Childhood. I have always had a passion for teaching and helping children from a young age. Teaching is something I have always seen myself doing. As a child, I looked up to the teachers I had and wanted to be just like them. My love for teaching and helping children has grown through my experiences in the field. Over the years, in different school experiences, I have found a passion for students of all walks of life. With my current position, the students have taught me so much about myself. Not only have they taught me to be a stronger culturally responsive teacher they also taught me how important it is to listen to them. They have helped foster my love for teaching and build relationships with students. I have learn that if you do not have a strong relationship, it is hard for them to come to you when they need it.
I have also fostered my love for teaching through being a unit counselor at my local Girl Scout camp, where I have been for five years. Here I have been with a range of children from three to thirteen. During my time at Girl Scouts, I have learned that if children do not have time for creativity and imagination, it is hard to help them grow in life. Here, I would allow time for time with make-believe, everything from fairies to things they would make up.
From a young age, I have always been involved in my community. I have done many charity walks, from raising funds for breast cancer awareness to, Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Light The Night Leukemia Lymphoma Society, and so much more. Also, for as long as I can remember, I have been an active member of the non-profit organization of Girl Scouts. Within this, I have also given back to my community.
